Here’s your curated Hartford event calendar for January 2023

What makes this list? Events that I would either attend or recommend to a good friend.
Check with each venue for information about Covid protection procedures and to verify that an event is still happening.

  • OTHER PEOPLE’S POEMS: Read someone else’s poem, or, just come and listen to everyone else. The sign up to read opens at 6:30; main event is 7:30-9:30 PM. This is at the Hartford Flavor Company (30 Arbor Street) on January 6, 2023.
  • ICE SKATING: Free ice skating in Bushnell Park continues through January 8. The rink is open from 12-8 PM on weekdays and 11-8 PM on the weekend.
  • BABY GRAND JAZZ: From 3-4 PM, enjoy a free jazz performance . . . somewhere. This is usually in the downtown Hartford Public Library, but due to the HPL Great Flood 2022, this event will be taking place elsewhere. Visit the library site to see what venue(s) will be hosting this while library folks repair the damage. This is on Sundays 1/8, 1/15, 1/22, and 1/29.
  • SOUND HEALING: Free program at the Free Center (460 New Britain Avenue): “A sound healing meditation utilizing crystal and Tibetan singing bowls, gong, ocean drum, chimes, and other healing tools to activate the relaxation response to calm your mind, relax your body, and nourish your soul.” This is on January 11 and January 25, 7:30-8:30 PM. This program is open for anyone with 48 hours of sobriety; advance registration is required.
  • ESPEJOS: “Two worlds collide one evening at a high-end resort in Mexico, igniting a series of misunderstandings, miscalculations, and internal reckonings.” This play at Hartford Stage will be in English and Spanish, with subtitles. This is January 12 through February 5, 2023. Ticket prices vary. For Hartford residents, check the library website for free passes.
  • CREATIVE COCKTAIL: Listen to live music, view the art, and maybe make some of your own. Creative Cocktail Hour at Real Art Ways (56 Arbor Street) is $15 (some discounts, including if you bike over). January 19, 2023, 6-10 PM.
  • DANCE WITH FIRE: The Wadsworth Atheneum is showing Pilchuck: A Dance with Fire as programming alongside its Fired Up exhibit. If you wanted to know more about how the studio glass movement has evolved, here’s your chance. See it on January 21 and 22, 2023 at 2 PM. Tickets are $9 general; $7 for members, Wadsworth Welcome, students, and seniors.
  • MUCH ADO ABOUT NOTHING: Yes, the Shakespeare rom-com. Cinestudio is screening this live broadcast from the National Theater stage, one day only, January 22, 2023 at 2 PM. General admission is $20.
  • DEGENERATE ART: Watch a film about glass pipe making. Ticket: $9; it’s $7 for members, Wadsworth Welcome, students, and seniors. This is at the Wadsworth Atheneum on January 28th and 29th at 2 PM,
