Though the community garden in Pope Park is not new this season, it’s still new enough to warrant praise for even existing. It took years for this to move forward, and while I do not know all the reasons for delay, at one time there had been pushback from one person who thought community gardens do not belong in parks.

As it turns out, the community rather likes the idea. There are a few garden beds still available, but many have been spoken for.

The Pope Park Community Garden is in the Bankside Grove section of the park, directly atop the buried Park River. There’s nothing to tell you that this is what the beds sit on. You just have to know.

The site choice was a smart one.

It’s right next to large apartment buildings, yet this portion of Pope Park has been underappreciated for years.
