Outside the Connecticut Education Association headquarters on Oak Street is Marilyn Parkinson Thrall’s Sandy Hook Memorial, which makes me these days think about not Newtown, Connecticut, but the ways educators have been routinely and consistently devalued.

Exhibit A: Not closing down face-to-face schooling entirely until all faculty and building staff had the opportunity to be fully vaccinated. Managing to both diminish trained educators by treating them like free babysitters, and demand miracles of them because kids are “falling behind” when the necessary tools and supports have simply not been provided. Frog Hollow was one of the neighborhoods promised free WiFi by the end of 2020; as of early March 2021, we are still not connected.

It’s not enough to applaud teachers with platitudes about selflessness and sacrifice. Start by respecting their health and lives. Give them the supplies needed to do their jobs well.
