It should go without saying that if you qualify, then getting your Covid vaccinations should be the first item on the agenda for the month.

ADD TO CALENDAR

  • HARTFORD JEWISH FILM FESTIVAL: No worries about ugly crying in the cinema. No getting confused about which films are playing at which venues. This year, the festival (February 28 through April 2, 2021) is virtual. There are a number of film discussions, including several for Shared Legacies about Black history in Connecticut and one titled Blacks, Jews, and Black Jews. Besides that documentary on the Civil Rights movement, there are many other promising films to choose from. A few that grabbed my attention: Holy Silence, Golden Voices, Sublet, City of Joel, Mossad, and Shiva Baby. The full schedule and pricing system (there are individual, partial access, and all access passes) can be seen on their website. Films may only be viewed in Connecticut.
  • YOGA: Toivo is offering free, virtual yoga classes. If you’re wondering what kind of yoga to expect, here is their description: “In these heartfelt and explorative classes, you will be encouraged to meet yourself right where you are and practice yoga for longevity. You will be guided to mindfully and compassionately cultivate connection, strength and flexibility in the mind, body and heart. This class is a blend of breath work, flowing movement, restoration and meditation based on the unique needs of the class.” This begins at 10 AM on March 2, 2021. Follow this link for registration information.
  • LITTLE FREE LIBRARY SCAVENGER HUNT: On the National Day of Unplugging (March 5-6, 2021), get outside and explore. While Hartford has not been listed as a participant (as of time of publication), I have reason to believe it will be. The official Little Free Library map is here, though not to brag, the one I’ve made (scroll down) has more included. For details on how this works, click here.
  • SEE A PLAY AT HOME: TheaterWorks has partnered with Hartford Public Library, so now Hartford library cardholders can check out a pass to stream plays. Next up (March 7-26, 2021) is Mr. Parent, a play in development that is described: “When an actor turns to teaching for a steady paycheck, he learns that it’s less of a job and more of a constant, visceral reminder of one’s own success and/or failure. Mr. Parent is a hilarious, joyful, and heartbreakingly honest peek into the kids, adults, and systems of the Boston Public Schools. Based on the real-life adventures of favorite Boston actor Maurice Parent, Mr. Parent asks, ‘What does it mean to show up for our kids — and ourselves?'” To borrow a library pass, click here. • TRAVELING BLACK: Dr. Mia Bay, author of Traveling Black: A Story of Race and Resistance, will be giving a virtual talk about her book in a free program sponsored by Twain and Stowe. Click here to register for this event, scheduled for March 25, 2021 at 7 PM.

ON A BUDGET,

Whether the pandemic is the first time that you’re experiencing economic chaos, or you’re someone for whom this is not your first proverbial rodeo, it’s important to have access to things beyond Netflix and doomscrolling.

This map shows you various points of interest in Hartford, from free libraries to public art to 24/7 food pantries to parks. It is updated monthly. I’m not omniscient — if there is something that should be added, please send an email:
