When I lived in the sticks it was rare to see a cop. That’s not because nobody  in rural America is criming. No doubt there are various reasons for this, including that the space between homes means that when nasty domestics happen, the neighbors are not always aware. In cities, you have no such space between homes; you can’t distance yourself from the reality of what goes on behind closed doors and can be heard out on the street.

The other day I was talking to a friend in his Frog Hollow driveway and over the course of ten or fifteen minutes we watched six cruisers go by. Just casually driving by — no lights or high speed chases.

The last few times I’ve walked through Zion Hill Cemetery, there has been a police vehicle parked there. At the park? Cop car. Sitting. To do what? Be a presence in case things get out of hand at the Covid test station?

The photo of this post shows activity of some sort on a side street near Pope Park.
