One of my talents is being able to see people where others see no one. Assuming this is not a superpower, but a learned skill, Here are some tips for noticing humans in this alleged ghost town.

People wear things besides suits and this season’s Patagonia. Adjust the eyes to recognize jeans, hooded sweatshirts, leggings, and the occasional crop top.

People don’t only buy $7 lattes and circle the block looking for parking. Refocus to see people doing other things like walking their dogs, carrying home bags of groceries, and collecting cans.

Look for people walking to bus stops, waiting at bus stops, and boarding buses. Expect to see people strolling through city parks.

People exist in the city neighborhoods, on the weekends. The trick is to be there to know this. Go. Get out of the vehicle and spend a few hours walking around.

To begin, try walking on any of these: Park Street, Broad Street, Franklin Avenue, Farmington Avenue (Sigourney to Prospect), or Albany Avenue (Main to Westbourne).

The people of Hartford share invisibility with its grocery stores. Unless we are being snobby or requiring a special ingredient, we may never need to go to a suburban supermarket. El Mercado, C-Town, and Bravo are fine. Learn where our grocery stores are situated and then look for people approaching with backpacks and granny carts.
