Back in 1954, the Courant reported that “A grim motorcade of wrecked automobiles” would kick off a program in which vehicles were inspected for safety. Similar parades took place elsewhere, including in New Britain and Boston; the latter featured vehicles involved in fatal crashes.

How much influence these gruesome displays have when it comes to deterring reckless driving, I couldn’t say, but we have not hosted such an event in a long while.
