Last Thursday, Terry Dame’s Electric Junkyard Gamelan played at Real Art Ways‘ monthly Creative Cocktail Hour.

I’ll say that I don’t usually care for any kind of music that even scrapes the boundaries of what could be classified as “Ambient,” unless it is playing during yoga class. Electric Junkyard Gamelan occasionally created a space age soundscape, but the dominant sound was closer to world music.

As far as I could tell, all of the instruments were created from typically non-instrument things, like rubber bands, piping, springs, and planters. I saw only one terracotta pot get smashed the whole time.

Speaking with some CCH-goers, I got to hear different rumors or misconceptions held of what the Creative Cocktail Hour is. To clarify: people don’t have to wear cocktail dresses, don’t need to dress weird, don’t have to drink, and aren’t all there to meet potential lovers. It seems silly in print, but I guess the event has a reputation for those things. Some people do dress up (and some dress strangely), and others wear the standard jeans & t-shirt. There is an element of pick-up joint to this, but more than anything, there’s regular social networking going on. The drinking isn’t any more mandatory than at any other event a person might go to. If you like martinis, then they do a specialty one every month, and there’s enough variety of booze and non-alcoholic beverages to keep everyone happy. To reiterate, you can’t BYOB, and you don’t need to buy anything while there.
