This week has been like Festivus in March. You have endured the feats of strength. Few prevailed.

Now, it becomes less like Festivus in that we are skipping the airing of grievances and giving out awards instead. Continue reading 'Award Ceremony: Five for Real'»

Wishing this Were: Five for Real

By , March 13, 2012 8:09 am

The second round of Real Hartford 5th Anniversary fun-n-games requires creativity.

Candy Chang of New Orleans wondered how people might influence development. She created fill-in-the-blank stickers which instead of reading “Hello my name is ____” state “I WISH THIS WAS_____.” People fill them out and stick them on all manner of surfaces, including vacant and/or blighted buildings.

Your mission: In the comments below, let us know what you wish any of the buildings and lots in these photos actually were. You do not need to include the number of the photo unless your suggestion/dream/wish/demand is specific to that location.

Those with the most creative or just best (totally subjective, I know) response(s) will be in the running for a small prize at the end of the week. You can enter as many times as you feel inspired. There could be multiple winners.

Place this Place: Five for Real

By , March 12, 2012 7:35 am

To be in the running for fabulous prizes, you’ll need to be especially competitive this week. As a bonus, the rules will be contradictory, opaque, and bizarre– much like local government.

Here’s how it works.

If you are the first to guess any of these three pictures correctly, you get the standard 24-hours of smugness. If you win two or more, you will be entitled to a small package of tangible goodies that have little-or-no monetary value.

To enter, leave your best guess along with the number of the image you are guessing. If your answer is ambiguous, it can not be counted.

The most correct answers before 12:01am on Tuesday wins!

Winners will be announced here on Tuesday morning and prize winner(s) will be contacted by email to arrange for pickup or delivery.

All of these photos are from locations in Hartford:

#1: The first image for this week's mystery place takes you for a rare trip indoors. Where in Hartford might you find this?

#2: This is kind of a freebie. Guess anyway.

#3: You dont need to name the structures, just the street

#3: You don't need to name the structures, just the street

Celebrating Five Years!

By , March 11, 2012 11:33 pm

This Friday marks five years of Real Hartford‘s existence, so leading up to that, there will be some extra attention on the site itself.

In addition to whatever else happens over the next few days, there will be fun and games from March 12-16, 2012, beginning with a special edition of Place this Place. There will be other such challenges on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday. What happens on Friday is a surprise.

Also on Friday, but not a secret: Real Hartford Happy Hour at La Paloma Sabanera from 3-6pm. This is where and when winners of this week’s contests can pick up their prizes. If you want to stop by and chat, grab yourself the drink special (Irish Cream Mocha) and pull up a chair. Continue reading 'Celebrating Five Years!'»
