Community Dialogues on Adult Learning

By Kerri Provost, March 26, 2012 3:28 pm

As over ninety people filed into the library atrium, they were greeted by the aroma of vegetable pakora, a welcome alternative to the standard satisfying-but-dull sandwiches; a pianist played tunes to create an inviting mood for the Community Dialogue Kick-off Event last week.

“Diversity also means inclusiveness,” Mayor Segarra told the crowd, as he spoke in support for greater access to learning opportunities, especially for immigrants. A part of inclusiveness, he suggested, was making sure that immigrant community is not “placed in a holding pattern for ten or fifteen years.”

Segarra –  who described how at age fifteen, without a diploma, he attended college — was one of several speakers advocating for “Adult Learning as a Pathway to Change,” the theme of the Community Dialogues. Continue reading 'Community Dialogues on Adult Learning'»

A Look Inside the Front Street Development

Heavenly Progress

By Kerri Provost, March 16, 2012 7:41 pm

It was announced today that on top of the $150,000 of federal Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) funds, the proposed skatepark at Heaven has been approved to receive another $10,000 from the Tony Hawk Foundation.

While some closely involved believe construction could be completed by the end of this summer, others have suggested that such predictions are too ambitious, saying that construction beginning during the summer would be more realistic.

Wishing this Were: Five for Real

By Kerri Provost, March 13, 2012 8:09 am

The second round of Real Hartford 5th Anniversary fun-n-games requires creativity.

Candy Chang of New Orleans wondered how people might influence development. She created fill-in-the-blank stickers which instead of reading “Hello my name is ____” state “I WISH THIS WAS_____.” People fill them out and stick them on all manner of surfaces, including vacant and/or blighted buildings.

Your mission: In the comments below, let us know what you wish any of the buildings and lots in these photos actually were. You do not need to include the number of the photo unless your suggestion/dream/wish/demand is specific to that location.

Those with the most creative or just best (totally subjective, I know) response(s) will be in the running for a small prize at the end of the week. You can enter as many times as you feel inspired. There could be multiple winners.
