Dinosaurs Unearthed Unveiled

By Kerri Provost, April 5, 2012 10:43 pm

1985: Through excavating historical remnants and making educated guesses, that was the last time I thought seriously about dinosaurs. They became extinct; what more could one possibly know?

At some time between me last paying attention and now, one of my favorite dinosaurs was determined to not even exist. Thanks, Connecticut Science Center. Continue reading 'Dinosaurs Unearthed Unveiled'»

Sneak Preview of A Walk Down Park Street

By Kerri Provost, April 4, 2012 6:59 am

Admittedly, not much sneaking had to occur, but the exhibit does not officially open until April 13th.

A group of teens, who did not appear to be forced by adults to view the art, were seen exploring the ArtWalk Gallery quietly on their own yesterday. They attempted to guess what location was depicted in the works. One thought the photos were of Downtown; another thought these were of New York City.

Jack McConnell’s work represents a “slice of life” along the vibrant Park Street corridor.

April Events

It really did take me a few days to realize we had entered a new month. Oops.

April 4

Hartford is in the process of selecting a new chief of police. The public is being asked to provide its input. If you have some opinions about what this leader should be like, drop by the Hartford Public Library at 6pm for a community forum. Continue reading 'April Events'»

A Tradition of Craft: Original, Reproduction, and Adaptation Furniture

You don’t spray Pledge on 17th-century furniture. Instead, as tedious as it may be, you use a soft rag to remove dust. The Connecticut “Sunflower” Chests — one created last year, the other in the period from 1680-1710 — proved to be time-consuming in this way. This style of furniture is actually misnamed, as the flowers carved on the front are thought to be marigolds, a symbol of the Huguenots. A Twist — Not Really — in Trinity Assault Case

By Kerri Provost, March 22, 2012 1:23 pm

It has been confirmed by a high ranking employee of the college that all suspects in the assault on Chris Kenny are students from Trinity. It is expected that the Hartford Police Department will be making arrests after students return from Spring Break.

While this individual could not speak on the record, this statement was made in a public setting today.

UPDATE: I have received many emails and comments about this article. Rather than respond to all of them individually, I will use this space to clear up some questions.

While rumors had circulated about this information for weeks, I refused to publish them because they were simply coming from faculty and students who had been getting their information secondhand. When this Trinity employee spoke in public yesterday it was not to me, but everyone in the space could hear this conversation. It should be noted that this employee’s position requires being informed about this matter. Naming the individual could result in the loss of that person’s job, but those who have consistently read Real Hartford know that I do not print gossip nor invent information.

Furthermore, this article should not be construed as an attack upon the victim. While the employee had disclosed other details about the case, I opted to not publish those because they could be damaging to the case.

I chose to publish this information because from the start a vocal minority repeated the rumor that the attackers were from the local community. It is unjust to allow residents to worry about the potential of random assaults when we have reliable information that suggests the public is not in danger.

UPDATE: (27 March) To be clear, the information being reported was not invented by me. I am simply acting as the messenger, reporting on what was spoken loudly and clearly by a Trinity employee. If that person’s statement lacks truth, then it reflects poorly on a high-ranking employee making such comments, particularly when advised by the Trinity administration not to speculate on the case.

UPDATE: (15 May 2012) The Courant finally gets around to publishing information that has been circulating since March: “Internal Trinity Report: ‘Preppy-looking White Males’ Assaulted Student.”

Trinity Students Oppose Gating Campus

By Kerri Provost, March 11, 2012 3:25 pm

About forty students and a few staff allies at Trinity have drafted an open letter dealing with safety issues on campus. They have said that a number of students have been critical of the recent rally

Dear Trinity Community,

We write to you as fellow Trinity students. We come as individuals who are deeply
saddened in regards to last weekend’s assault against our classmate Chris Kenny. We
hope for his speedy recovery and will continue to keep him and his family in our prayers.

We have come to understand that some students feel the answer to stop crime is to isolate
the Trinity Community from the Hartford Community. This letter is not a response to
the unfortunate events of last weekend, but rather, it is a response to the ever-present
discourse of erecting a gate. We understand the emotional impulse to create a barrier
but this is not a sustainable or sensitive solution. For the following reasons, we urge the
campus to consider other means of increasing safety and security for ALL students:

It goes without saying that safety is important to everyone. However, we must consider
that safety does not mean the same thing for everyone
. There are Trinity students
from Hartford. A gate threatens to not only estrange them from the community they
call home but also causes conflict within Trinity. If we continue to perceive all Hartford
residents as “the other” we alienate fellow Trinity students whose family and life-
long friends may be considered “Hartford locals” as well. In addition, we regard the
term “Hartford Local” to be a racially charged epithet. The phrase often conjures the
image of a Black or Latino, marginalized, working class individual. Many of our Black
and Latino classmates have cited incidents of Campus Safety being called on them or
being denied entrance to College facilities. How might our understanding of “the other”
further alienate students of color on campus?

A gate would only give us the illusion of safety. Trinity cannot and should never
become a fortress. Continue reading 'Trinity Students Oppose Gating Campus'»
