You may have noticed these patterns getting painted across intersections in Hartford and West Hartford recently.

This is not just somebody with gallons of extra paint getting creative.

As the signs indicate, these markings are another way to drive home the message that inching vehicles into the intersection and causing traffic jams is unacceptable behavior that could result in a fine. If you have ever ventured into the busy intersections at rush hour, you have seen this play out.

These highly visible reminders have popped up in various locations including Broad Street and Capitol Avenue, Farmington and Sisson Avenue, and Main and Pearl Street/Central Row.

The idea is to reduce congestion in intersections while helping pedestrians safely use the streets.

Nothing guarantees that motorists will use more caution — not even those terrific disco stop signs found near Boulevard in West Hartford — but this sort of loud statement is hard to ignore if paired with consistent enforcement.
