With Luke Bronin in non-stop meetings for weeks, it may have been only a formality for him to take the oath of office just after midnight, next to the Soldiers and Sailors Memorial Arch as the second fireworks show began.

Folding the oath into the annual First Night festivities, the new mayor demonstrated fiscal responsibility. The celebration that followed was a small group at Salute, having a single champagne toast, and then dispersing. No caviar, ball gowns, or fancy cars shuttling anyone around.

There was an eagerness to get moving, as appointments and nominations were made over the past week. Thea Montañez, who has been the director of the North Hartford Promise Zone, was named Chief of Staff. Samaia Hernández is the new Director of Communications; Sean Fitzpatrick will be, if approved by City Council, the new Director of Development Services. Corporation Counsel will be Howard Rifkin, pending approval.

May this level of pragmatism and conservative spending be maintained for the full term.
