It was not until looking at this photo later that this home’s blemishes revealed themselves.

The context is a block or so that includes gas stations, a police substation, surface parking, and the sprawl of soulless new construction that is part of the spreading medical industry in Hartford, all mixed in with various types of housing.

It’s not that most of the buildings here are unattractive, but that the built landscape feels so uneven in appearance that it comes off as an area not knowing what it wants to be. Sometimes this type of hodgepodge will come off as endearingly eclectic. That’s not really going on here, but a few of the houses improve the area immensely. This little yellow house is one of them.
