The City of Hartford is saying that all roads have been plowed and are deemed “passable.”
Passable, to them, means for vehicles with snow tires and for motorists who know how to drive in the snow.
What do you think? Are the streets in Hartford already passable?
Margo Lynn
And, apparently, for bicyclists.

I believe that the man pictured is a bike messenger, so this should also be captioned “not for amateurs”

No. Not passable. And while we’re on the subject of snow-clearing, side streets remained very dangerous until snow MELTED in addition to inadequate clearing after the last storm. Sidewalks, bus stops, fire hydrants, all of these have remained buried too long. There will be unintended consequences, possibly tragic ones, without better attention. Even just the slow slog of being a pedestrian in Hartford takes its toll as well.

The snow plow just now came down my street for what I think is the first time today.

The lack of snow tires is impressive and befuddling. Do most people just not have them here, or does it just seem that way? It does snow every year here, and you can just put two on the front if you have a basic, front 2WD car. I know its not super cheap, but neither is not being able to get where you’re going.

Maybe those who are below or just at the poverty line could comment on that one
Justin
Indeed. Why we need better bus transit and sidewalk clearing.

I’ve been emphasizing homeowner responsibility, but there is a lot of City sidewalk that needs to be cleared too. Wonder if the sidewalk around Heaven Skate Park will see a shovel this year?
Richard
Someone told me that the buses ran all day and into the night yesterday. A driver told me today that 35 buses got stuck and had to wait to get out. Being a walker I will be calling the city to get some of the sidewalks cleared. I am going to walk to work on Wednesday so I will see about the path from behind the Armory into the Park. I don’t know though dare I as I will be madder than a wet hen if I have to turn around or get my boots full of snow. At least last time I went through there it was so much better than last year since the sidewalk has been fixed.
Today is my first day back out, I stayed in all day yesterday and watched the action from my window. One thing that does get me is when the city doesn’t clean the walks they are responsible for, I then call 311 right away.

Downtown sidewalks weren’t terrible, actually. The worst I encountered was where you cross from the park to Trumbull Street. There was some nonsense there, but it wasn’t awful. Maybe this looks good because near your place it was just one large snowbank that I was walking in this morning and not happy about.
Richard
They must have done some cleaning up as when I left for work it was ok all the way up the hill except on the corner and the west side of Park Terrace near the woods.
One place that PPT always forgets is along the Tennis courts on Laurel. Next up getting someone to clear out the bus stops. What a job that will be. In front of the Gold Building it really is something. Travelers and the Hartford Steam Boiler building on State Street really know how to clean up snow from the front of their buildings.
Justin
I haven’t been through that path into Bushnell at all this year with the snow — are they clearing that now at least? That would be a positive development over last year’s ice rink…
Kerri Provost
I haven’t been over that way yet since this last snow storm. There was some clearing last week, but not much and paths just ended oddly. A massive improvement would be if they had someone in charge of this who understands the concept of using a park as part of a commuting route. There was a path cleared up to one of the “NO you can’t cross here” fences barricading the ditch. Why? So you can walk to the edge and look at where you can’t actually walk?

Laurel St still has 4 feet of snow in the parking lane. Not sure where they expect our cars to go.
