Change and the resentment of it go hand-in-hand.

It’s been a few years now since the Festival of Light on Constitution Plaza was abandoned as the City’s focal point for holiday cheer.

Even with the free skating in Bushnell Park, the first year (2010) got off to a rocky start with a contemporary light display that did not sit well with those expecting the traditional angels and deer.

Those disenchanted by this move called for a return of the Festival of Light to Constitution Plaza, perhaps not knowing that for the next few years, the concrete expanse continued to display the giant fountain, angels with their horns, and trees. Santa and refreshments might have relocated, but the plaza had not gone dark.

This year, the number of lights have dwindled on a plaza that is partly in disrepair and partially freshly rehabbed.

The Boat Building continues to decorate its plaza-level lobby. The angels and spectacular fountain are gone, but trees are lit. It’s much quieter, but the lights are still on. Maybe this is no longer a destination, but for an evening dog walk, it remains a nice diversion.

And if you look closely, you might even find surprises.
